From New Zealand, MailWasher lets you check and manage your E-mails before you download them. Note: Simple basic tools: Works fine and fast. Better make a copy of important email, some email marked as friend can disappear! It could happens with some email server and other not.

The French National Post Service offer a completely FREE and sophisticated email service including POP download to your Computer email client. (The Post Office Protocol (Pop3) allows computers to retrieve messages from mailboxes on mail servers)

After registering you just set the new entity. In the "Server" SMPT Window write: smtp.laposte.net in case that your IPS don't allows you to use other SMPT just left your default email SMPT
and in POP3 Window write : pop.laposte.net
Your ID and password...  that all! now you can download your mail
In case that my bad English is better than your French, don't worry, just  use Alta Vista- Systran to translate the French pages.

If you use robot form shoot your data, the HTML form is in English.
The main advantage of @Laposte.net over commercial Free email service is to be a National Governmental Free service that will not get out of business eventually from one day to the other as unfortunately did many good US WEB free service latterly or charge for the service like Yahoo. Anyway the free email POP service mostly consist to attract 100,000"s for later eventually obliging them to pay to keep using the service, causing otherwise the trouble to get unreachable.

IN the USA : http://www.hotpop.com/ * it is good  relatively  new operation that offer: Free POP3 accessible email, sending mail with SMTP access, forwarding mail with advanced features! You can forward your mail to up to three addresses, and they are currently developing software to allow filtering and routing of your messages. I do use this fine free service.

Comment: An eventual advantages of using an Outlook Express alternative, could be because most emails virus are programmed to use Outlook Express  to get in windows' system. In time of epidemic a precaution remains to check the mail in the server, before to Download it.

The HTML editing ability of Outlook Express, remain the only advantage, at my point of view,  over Pegasus Mail incredible flexibility of options.

To be honest, Outlook Express is a great tool, if you take the time to learn how to use the options and get around some imposed limitations, such the multiple use of a particular  message.
My solution is to save the message as a background or signature and to use the  "New message with background" or the "limited" capacity of the "signature inset" in the answer mode.

   Fox Mail 

Foxmail supports POP3 accounts as well as Hotmail accounts and offers support for HTML email, mailbox encryption, multiple accounts and more.

Foxmail also comes with a WYSIWIG tool to compose nice looking HTML emails from templates or scratch.
The program also offers filter options, allowing you to act upon incoming mail that meets certain criteria - you can delete messages, forward them, auto-respond to them and more based on keywords appearing in the subject, address, text etc.

The Express Send feature enables you to send mail directly to the recipient, using the built in SMTP server, thereby bypassing your ISP.

Foxmail includes many other features, including a remote mail viewer to manage mail on the server, as well as a small scroll ticker that displays message subjects as they arrive in your inbox..

It is probably one of the most capable email programs you can find and an excellent alternative to Outlook Express (can import Outlook messages).

The capacity of HTML editing that was the only good reason to keep using Outlook express is gone. Pegasus Edit in HTML, inserts images, tables, signature including images, etc
